What to Expect Before Your Breast Augmentation Procedure
When you select Altman Aesthetics Center Med Spa and Dr. Altman for your breast enhancement, you will meet personally with Dr. Altman for an evaluation. Dr. Altman examines you during this visit while listening to your aesthetic goals. Next, you and the doctor will discuss sizes and aesthetic shapes for your breasts to determine what will look best on your body shape and be a good fit for life.
Dr. Altman cares about his clients and wants to help them achieve the most optimal outcome, but it is also important to have realistic expectations for this surgery. This initial consultation takes up to an hour.
What to Expect During Your Breast Procedure
On the day of your breast augmentation, you will meet once more with Dr. Altman to discuss your goals again and go over implant size. Once everything is finalized, you will go into the operating room. Dr. Altman positions you in a way that the arms are down by the sides. This helps make the surgery and aftercare less painful. Typically, doctors have women stretch their arms up at a 90-degree angle, creating more tension and pain. With the arms relaxed by your side, the muscle is relaxed. In addition, by using this position, the procedure is more comfortable, and there is less to no postoperative discomfort. Dr. Altman has coined his surgery as the no-downtime breast augmentation.
Dr. Altman always uses a dual-plane technique. The breast tissue is elevated for a short distance before creating the submuscular pocket for the implant. This enables the breast to be fuller at the bottom than at the top. In addition, this helps produce a much more natural appearance and feeling.
Once the pocket is created, the implant is put into place using a no-touch technique. This results in less risk of infection or development of scar tissue (capsular contracture).
Breast Augmentation Aftercare & Recovery
After the procedure, the incision is meticulously closed using two layers of absorbable suture and then covered with a surgical adhesive so that the patient can shower within 24 hours. This is called the no-downtime breast augmentation because you can wear your normal underwire bra within 24 hours, return to work within 48 hours (for a non-physical job), and do not need narcotic pain medication. The actual surgery (or the procedure itself) lasts 30 to 45 minutes. This means less anesthesia, less chance of bleeding, and less pain. Ultimately less grogginess and fatigue throughout the remainder of the day.
As usual with this surgical procedure, mild swelling usually occurs and resolves within 1 to 2 weeks. Stitches are absorbable. If you work out regularly, most patients can resume regular exercise within 2 weeks; however, they cannot perform chest exercises until cleared by Dr. Altman.
Important things to note:
- All stitches are absorbable—no need to come out.
- The incision site is covered with surgical glue so you can shower within 24 hours, wash your hair and put your hands above your head within 24 hours. In addition, you can wear an underwire bra within 24 hours.
- Smooth round implants in different profiles to accommodate different desires and shapes. No teardrop or textured.
